Spirit
of '76 is a co-op house looking for a non-smoking, housemate to join five cooperatively minded individuals (4 M, 1F) and
two cats. The house has been owned and operated cooperatively for over 30 years. A new housemate will be prepared to participate
in business meetings, workdays, dinners and fun nights that maintain our home and community. People with carpentry, gardening,
and bookkeeping skills are particularly encouraged to apply.
We're
located in West Medford, a quiet, multi-cultural neighborhood just over the Mystic River from Somerville and Arlington. There's
EASY ACCESS to the T via two bus lines (94/80) and the commuter rail (just a 11-minute ride to North Station) is right around
the corner from us. Davis Square, Tufts, Arlington Center and West Medford Square are all nearby. The house is a large 1890s
Dutch Colonial with off-street parking, a huge yard, great trees, hardwood floors, stained glass, and several lovely antique
features. We have cable TV and Internet in every bedroom and study. We would like to renovate our kitchen and have three
newly-remodeled bathrooms, new storm windows, and improvements in our two kitchens. This space is available immediately,
but we are flexible with the move- in date. The bedroom is on the second floor and has windows on two walls. There is lots
of common space to share, and we've got plenty of storage space in our basement and garage.
Together,
by consensus, we manage the house in all of its operations. We have monthly house meetings to talk about finances, any problems
to be fixed, group dynamics and when we might have our next BBQ. Every four to seven weeks we set aside a weekend day as
a "work day" to do larger tasks (clean gutters, paint walls, do yard work, or organize house records, for example). We try
to have house dinners and fun nights once or twice a month. Every person pays the same amount: $425 per month (includes utilities,
newspapers, cable and other household expenses). We also share some food expenses. There is a fully-refundable equity payment
of $1100 to move in. At least half of this needs to be up front before you move in, the other half needs to be paid in within
6 months.
